Obama Artwork in Barcelona

Barack Barcelona

Barely two months has passed since that fateful night. Will he?, won’t he?” we all asked, and finally, on 4th November 2008 he did. You could say Obama stole the limelight in 2008. These elections were truly electrifying, and they brought with them a sense of change for the future, an end to poor politics in the US and because of Obama’s charisma and colour of his skin.

Perhaps most importantly for the millions of Americans who voted for Obama in the elections are the key virtues that Obama represents; hope, optimism and security for the future, feelings that McCain just couldn’t stir up in the general public.

Artists around the globe have supported Obama’s bid, inspired by his rigour, views and down to earth nature. Support from a variety of celebrities has come through in recent months, specifically in the media and through photos and works of art.

The talented Cuban artist Jorge Rodriguez Gerada made public his support for the future American president with his grandiose work of art. In fact, it was so grandiose that it covered the forum beach in Barcelona close to many apartments in barcelona, and was a enormous depiction of the new President’s head (139×82), created by a small army of volunteers and contributors, made from plaster and sand in different colours and depicting the contours of the best known face of 2008.

“Expectations” is a perfect title for this creation in the sand because it mirrors the hope that his supporters have for the future. Bad desicions and bad politics in the US in recent years could mean only one thing: a need for change and Obama answered this call, this is why this art was created before Obama won. The elections were so big and and Obama’s impact so strong, that the art was made to reflect the enormity of it all. Not only this, but the artist chose this particular location for the artwork, (which was picked up by Google Earth satellites) because of the multifaceted nature of Barcelona, a multicultural capital that is full to the brim of Europeans, North Africans and North, South and Central Americans, who fill many apartments barcelona.

More art will almost certainly be dedicated to the future president due to his inspiritational nature, we can only wait to see what changes he can bring as president.
