Escape to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands
One of Europe’s favourite holiday islands called Lanzarote can be found in the Atlantic Ocean only a relatively short distance from the coast of Africa. And is part of the Canarian archipelago, once thought by scholars to be the remnants of the lost city of Atlantis. In more modern times though Lanzarote has become an exceptionally popular holiday destination welcoming millions of travellers each year .
The separate islands that make up the Canarian archipelago though are considered to be like chalk and cheese, and both the cultural aspects and the character of each of the islands is quite independent of the others. With the eastern islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura being governed from Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. While El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma have their administrative capital on the island of Tenerife.
Intrepid Victorian travellers were visiting Lanzarote as early as the 19th century . But modern tourism only started to take off during the 1970´s. As General Franco began to loosen his stranglehold on Spain in order to attract much needed foreign currency to his ailing economy.
Today however is a totally different story and Lanzarote happily welcomes millions of visitors every year. The majority arriving on flights to Lanzarote from the UK, Eire and Germany. Further bolstered by a summer influx of visitors from the mainland. Most of which are very happy to get away from the very hot mainland temperatures in favour of the much more appealing Canarian climate.
Holiday trends have changed in recent years and with an upsurge in internet usage coupled with excellent transportation links to the Island, independent travellers are on the increase. The upshot of this is that there has been a surge in demand for apartments and villas in Lanzarote. With self catering holiday accommodation in the main resorts representing a high percentage of the total amount of tourist beds now available here.
The most luxurious rental villas in Puerto del Carmen can be located in areas such as Risco Prieto. Which sits right at the top of the Old Town, overlooking the picturesque harbour area which is currently being transformed into a luxury marina.
Whilst holidaymakers on the lookout for villas in Playa Blanca should would be best looking at the Montana Roja and Rubicon Marina areas. As this is where the largest crop of good quality rental properties are located within the resort.
Not all Lanzarote’s visitors are lured here by the beaches however and rural tourism is increasing in popularity as visitors seek to experience the culture and natural out of resort lifestyle the island is so famous for. Many visitors who tour the island often comment just how unspoiled it is . This is one of the reasons that prompt many to return time and time again to experience the real Lanzarote in countryside fincas and apartments.
