Some excellent ruins include Talum and Chichen Itza.
If you do not want to go to Mexico City because of the pollution then Guadalajara is an excellent substitute. Guadalajara still has plenty of Mexican culture but it has less crime, is more modern and has much less pollution. You will find a lot of nightlife, restaurants, museums and galleries to keep you occupied. This is also the place to be if you like tequila and it is the drink of choice in this area.
The geography of Mexico is so varied that you will not have any trouble finding something to do. You can visit the desert to the north, the volcanic are in the center and the rainforests to the south. There is something for any traveler and the large availability of gay scenes makes it an excellent spot for gay travel.
