The Isle Of Harris And Outer Hebrides Tours

Spending most of my vacation on the beach isn’t something I would consider. Please don’t misunderstand me, at times I really do enjoy relaxing on a beach, but, I also like to spend time visiting other places while on vacation. I love to soak in the atmosphere, which is often unique, I also like to experience the local culture and especially enjoy sampling the food. If the truth is to be known each year I enjoy visiting new places and I I spend a great deal of time trying to find somewhere 100% unique and different. This is the most likely reason why I so thoroughly enjoy visits to the Hebridean island known as the Isle of Harris and why I often choose to hire Harris self catering cottages.

Harris is a little island found off the west coast of the Scottish mainland. The island is only one of over 300 of small isles  known widely as the Outer Hebrides, although to be one hundred percent correct the UK postal address is the Western Isles. Accepted as either/or the Western Isles or the Outer Hebrides the islands are breathtakingly beautiful and interestingly unique. For those folk who simple can’t do without a golden sandy beach Harris has a multitude to choose from and nearly all are incredibly picturesque and more often than not deserted. It seems as though around bend in the road you are met by a truly awesome sight. The Harris roads are a little unusual in some areas you will need to traverse single track roads and you will need to know how to use passing places to allow traffic to pass from ahead and behind. Just remember to stop on the left hand side of the road. But, If you are faced with a very big vehicle wishing to get past and the passing place is to the right hand side of the road you may tuck yourself into it to let the large vehicle pass easily but be careful not to drive off the edge of the road too much.

One of the main reasons folk visit the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the islands landscape and culture. The Isle of Harris culture has, through the generations been immensely influenced by the Scottish, English, Celtic and Norse races. These days the vast majority of folk speak in the Gaelic language and although some speak English, it is often their 2nd language. The Harris inhabitants are amongst the most friendly in the world and the hospitality is well known across the globe. The people of the Isle of Harris are very proud of the awesome beauty of the island and try very hard to keep the place very tidy so it is crucially important to clear up any of your litter.

Dotted all along the south west coast of the Isle of Harris you will discover some of the most breath takingly beautiful beaches in all of Scotland, and many folk say the whole of the U.K. You will, most probably, notice how crystal clear the waters are and it is true to say that the Harris beaches are lovely and clean. Alarmingly it is impossible to avoid debris washing up from ships in the Atlantic but happily there isn’t much.
