Vacations In Bradford, England and Things To See And Do
Bradford is located in West Yorkshire, a county in England. Lying in the foothills of the Pennines (mountain range) Bradford was excellently placed to thrive during the industrial revolution. In fact, during the eighteen hundreds, Bradford was at the very forefront of the Industrial revolution and the town very quickly became an important international textile manufacturing centre, specialising in the wool industry and Bradford became known as the wool capital of the world. Because of the abundance of raw materials of coal, iron ore and soft water the city witnessed rapid expansion of its manufacturing base and an equally rapid growth in population. Sadly the city’s textile industry fell into decline in the mid 20th century. Since that time the city has become something of a rather popular short break destination with a respectable number guest houses providing Bradford bed and breakfast.
Bradford’s industrial heritage has left a legacy of fine examples of Victorian constructions, which include; the former Wool Exchange, Alhambra Theatre, old mills and the City Hall with it’s gothic extension at the rear. The oldest construction situated in the confines of Bradford is the Cathedral, which dates back to the medieval period, and was, for the greater period a simple parish church. Sadly only a few buildings survive from this time, excluding Bolling Hall. Bolling Hall is currently home to a museum, situated approximately 1m away from the city centre. Built in a quiet, beautiful garden, the museum takes the visitor on a fascinating journey, to a period dating back about five hundred years, through the lives and times of the families who could once refer to Bolling Hall as home.
Bradford is the home of the National Media Museum, which is more than likely, the most popular museum found outside of England’s capital city, London. Previously named the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, the highly entertaining National Media Museum is a free to enter tourist attraction which is suitable for visitors of all ages. The museum has 3 cinemas, of which one is said to be the finest in England. Folk can explore television’s past, present and future in Experience TV, watch your favourite moments in television in TV Heaven, muck around with lenses, colour and light in the Magic Factory and explore the exciting world of animation and watch a real animator at work in the Animation Gallery. At weekends and during holidays the Media Museum has a highly exciting jam packed schedule of free tours, activities and talks.
