City Breaks In Cambridge and Useful Things To Know

The city of Cambridge is widely known all over the world for being the home of the University of Cambridge, one of the world’s finest learning centres. The University includes some thirty one colleges including; Peterhouse, Queens’ College, Robinson College and St Catharine’s College which dominate the city. Although large numbers of folk arrive at Cambridge in order to see the University, Cambridge has many more attractions well worth a visit other than the college buildings of the University.  Luckily there is a varied selection of bed and breakfasts in Cambridge to choose from (Important: the last paragraph has more info about this).

The city is an ancient town dating back to the medieval period and subsequently there there is an abundance of excellent architecture. It is possible to wander through the medieval streets, enjoy one of the various parks or gardens or you may go punting along the river. If you like the idea of punting, then it is possible to rent a punt or as an alternative one can rent a chauffeured punt. You will find a small number of companies offering this facility along the River Cam. As a further alternative a small journey up the river in a narrowboat.

Cambridge is also widely known for its churches, with thirteen of them to be found within the boundaries of the city. Of the thirteen churches situated in the centre of Cambridge it is All Saints Church which is one of the most fine examples of English Gothic revival architecture. Another important church is Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of only 4 Norman round churches in the country. The smallest church in Cambridge is St Peter’s, which hides in a quiet part of the town. Possibly the most spectacular panoramic views across the city of Cambridge and colleges of the University are to be experienced from the viewpoint of the University church, the Great St Mary’s Church.

Because there is such a vast collection of visitor attractions to see in Cambridge, it would be virtually impossible to view all of them in just one day.  We therefore advise that you spend a minimum of 2 days in Cambridge. If you and your family are currently deciding upon taking a break in Cambridge it is vital that you reserve your  accommodation at the earliest moment because, sadly Cambridge guest houses and hotels tend to be amazingly busy and are commonly fully booked for months in advance. If you are a large group you may find that apartment accommodation in Cambridge prove to be more affordable alternative.
