City Breaks In Inverness, Scotland and Some Facts You Should Know
Inverness, widely known as the capital city of the Scottish Highlands, was granted city status in two thousand and one and at the moment is the only city in the Highlands of Scotland. Uniquely the city has no legal boundaries which can cause problems with population statistics. The problem is exaggerated because the population of the city is sharply increasing, Inverness has the highest growth rate in Britain. One thing we can state with some certainty is that the population of the city is rather content , in 2008 the Telegraph ranked the city 5th out of 189 cities in Britain for its quality of life. From this we can safely say that Inverness is a pretty alright place in which to spend some time and this is probably one of the reasons which make the city amazingly popular with tourists. Inverness is also frequently called the gateway to the Highlands of Scotland for the simple fact that it is the best place to make the most of the Highland public transport system and a large amount of tourist attractions are easy to get to. Probably the best way to reach them is by using a tour or day trip. There are a few companies visiting places such as, Urquart Castle, Loch Ness or Culloden or for the adventurous tourists it is possible to visit John O’Groats and Orkney in a single day. A small percentage of tourists choose to stay in 2 towns or cities in the Scottish Highlands for example Inverness and, later, Fort William. The town of Fort William is extremely popular with sports people especially hill walkers, mountaineers and ramblers who take their chances getting to the top of Ben Nevis which is only a short distance from the town center. In a similar fashion Fort William bed and breakfast and like most bed and breakfast in Scotland it is most often inexpensive, very good value for money and very comfortable, tidy and clean with world renowned hospitality.
One of the most important things to remember is that the nearest airport to Inverness is, about, seven miles to the east at Dalcross. It is possible catch a bus to the small and busy airport which is quite cheap. If you need maps of the area then you will discover that they are free at the tourist office, in the center of town. While you are enjoying your Inverness vacation you should make a point to visit Inverness Castle, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, the ‘stone of tubs’ and Mercat Cross especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an interactive experience which is great fun.
